Locks used on exit doors which also include fire doors and path of travel doors are governed by building codes of australia bca ordinance d2 21.

There should be no locks or catches. They must be free of devices or alarms that could restrict use of the exit route if the device or alarm fails. There are also additional requirements where the door is the final exit point of a building. Any room connected to an exit route must have a side hinged door that swings outward if more than 50 people occupy the room.

The door that connects any room to an exit must open out in the direction of exit if the room must hold 50 people or more and is in an area likely to burn extremely rapidly or explode. Exit route doors must be unlocked from the inside. Side hinged exit doors must be used to connect rooms to exit routes. Each exit route door must be free of decorations or signs that obscure the visibility of the exit route door.

If there is a fire in the area where occupants are they are already being exposed to smoke fire and heat. D2 21 emergency exits and as1428 1 dda disabled compliance are but just two. In addition the ibc requires a tactile exit sign adjacent to the door to an egress stairway an exit passageway and the exit discharge 1011 3 1003 2 10 3 2000 addresses doors to egress stairways only.

The nfpa emergency exit door requirements code states there is a maximum travel distance allowed to find an exit. This access to exit requirements seeks to minimize occupants exposure to these and other hazards. Exit doors must be unlocked so they can be opened from the inside. 1910 37 b 4 if the direction of travel to the exit or exit discharge is not immediately apparent signs must be posted along the exit access indicating the direction of travel to the nearest exit and exit discharge.

An exit access must be at least 28 inches wide. The ibc requires exits and exit access doors to be marked by illuminated exit signs 1011 1003 2 10.
